DISCUSSION OF
STRATEGIC WAIVER SCHOOL SYSTEM APPLICATION

The Long County Board of Education announced its intent to designate Long County Schools as a Strategic Waiver School System at the March 10, 2015, Board Meeting. The local Board of Education submitted a letter to the State Board of Education indicating the decision to apply for “Strategic Waiver School System” flexibility. All school districts in Georgia were required to declare a flexibility option by June 30, 2015, in order to continue receiving waivers from the State Board of Education. The flexibility allows districts to be innovative in exchange for increased academic accountability and allows the state to take over the governance of schools that fail to meet performance targets after five years.

The application serves as a performance contract with the State Board of Education (SBOE) and grants the district freedom from specific Title 20 provisions, SBOE rules, and Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) guidelines with the intent to improve student performance. One step in the development of this contract is to obtain community input at a public hearing. A draft application is ready for public review. The details of the draft may change following the local public review or as a result of discussions with the state officials during the submission process.
